| The history of this country is replete with examples of the love of Americans for one another, from those white engineers on the underground railway who risked their lives and fortunes by helping runaway slaves, to the valiant good men of the old west who tried, vainly, to assist the native Americans, to those New England patricians who fought for equality and civil rights for Irish-Americans. In America, never the less, it requires courage and conviction to state, openly, that one loves any ethnic group other than his own. | ||||
Yes, there is hate and there is love within all of us------ and all of us too often discuss and therefore stress the hate, but it is our belief that we ought to minimize the hate while discussing and stressing the love. The "SpeakofLove" shirts intend to do just that. They will be worn by Americans of all persuasions who love enough, and have courage enough, to say "I love fellow Americans who differ from me, and I believe fellow Americans who differ love me- - - - and I want the world to know it." To purchase a "SpeakofLove" certified shirt the buyer must certify that he or she is not a member of the group for which love is being declared. We assume that everyone is proud of, and loves, their own ethnic group. The shirt must be an affirmation of your love for some American group other than your own, and you must sign the Certificate of Non-Ethnicity, or "not belonging." We believe, like Petrarch, that love is the crowning grace of humanity, and is the golden link that binds us to duty and truth and brotherhood. We believe, also, that if you are American, irrespective of how you became American, you are our brother. As Americans, we will embrace one another, and, if the world allows us, we will embrace the world. |
